Eating and Drinking

Updated March 14 2006

Greece is universally known for its traditional cooking and Corfu is no exception. Being an Island it is well known for its seafood; although anything from stuffed vine leaves to locally seasoned lamb chops are readily available.

If seafood is your favourite it is usual to go inside the taverna and select your own fish. Remember that it is usual that fish is priced by the Kilo not the fish.

Outside of Corfu Town you are generally restricted to the local tavernas, here the best advice is to simply ask a local Corfiot where they would go for a meal. Chances are they will direct you to a restaurant that’s slightly off the beaten track but specialises in home cooked food. Find the right places and the menu will be delicious and much cheaper than the usual tourist venues. You‘re more likely to get a memorable, good meal at a taverna than at the international hotels and tourist orientated restaurants.

Corfu Town is very cosmopolitan and the choice is pretty much unlimited. Most of the local tavernas specialise in Greek food but there are also pizza and Burger Bars near the Main Square ,even a McDonalds. Most of the local Bars also do tasty snacks should you want something with an ice cold beer.

As for wine ,it would not be right to order anything but Greek. It’s not all retsina. The house wines are generally excellent and if you’re lucky you may even be offered a drop of some locally produced brew. Most bars also have an array of local spirits as well as the beers and other tipples that we’re more familiar with.

And of course whilst you are in Greece –Corfu you must try an Ouzo , most Corfiots in the local tavernas drink Ouzo try it with lemonade. Remember Eating and Drinking in Corfu is a daily pastime and its and ideal opportunity to watch the world (Greece) go by.
